Princeton, TX lies on U.S. Highway 380 near Farm Roads 75, 1377, and 982, northeast of Dallas and Plano. A town with humble beginnings, it's now considered one of the fastest-growing towns or cities in the country. T.B. and George Wilson began farming in the area in the late 1870s. The growing network of railroads ran through the area by 1881, with the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad Company passing through the land. The area became known as Wilson's Switch. The brothers applied for a post office, but the name Wilson had already been taken. The name Princeton came from Prince Dowlin, a local landowner and friend of the town.

Incorporated in 1912, John K. Wilson was the first mayor. Retail and commercial prominence came from the town's location in the agricultural region of the Blackland Prairie. The town grew quickly, reaching up to 500 residents and providing electricity, water, natural gas, and paved roads by the mid-1920s.

A migratory work camp was established in 1940, housing those who came to work on the onion and cotton farms. Located where Community Park is, the camp housed between 300 and 400 people. In 1945, the camp was converted to a prisoner of war (POW) camp for Germans captured during World War II. The POWs were employed by the city to make improvements, including enlarging the city park.

Since then, Princeton has continued to grow, especially with the growth of the Dallas metro area and Plano as a business center for Collin County.
